As we get older, we may need some extra support to help us remain living comfortably and safely in our own homes. However, admitting that live-in care is required can be difficult, especially for an elderly person who wishes to remain living at home and in control of their life for as long as possible, as well as not wanting to be a burden on their friends and family.

As a result, family members need to keep a close eye on their loved ones to see if there are any of the tell-tale signs that they might now require additional support to complete daily living tasks.

What are the signs that a loved one may need live-in care?

  • They are having falls more frequently

If your loved one is falling over more, this would suggest that their mobility is worsening. Look out for signs of bruising and scrapes.

  • They are losing weight

Weight loss is a common sign that your loved one may be struggling to cope on their own. Many health conditions can lead to weight loss, including depression and cancer, but dementia can also cause changes to your loved one’s health. Are they also managing their diet and nutrition intake as well as they used to before?

  • They seem depressed

Is your loved one quieter than normal, or do they seem particularly low? Try to keep an eye out for any changes to their behaviour.

  • They seem lonely

Lack of companionship is associated with depression and heart problems, so it’s important to keep an eye on their emotional state as well as their physical health.

  • They are neglecting their personal care & appearance

If you notice a change in your loved one’s appearance or body odour, it may be a sign that they are no longer capable of completing all personal care tasks on their own.

  • Their house is unclean and untidy

If you have noticed your loved one’s home is becoming unkept and unclean, this could be a sign that they lack the physical capacity to tidy up after themselves. Especially if they are usually very house proud.

  • They seem confused

Confusion can be a sign of dementia, and it can also be a sign of overall cognitive decline, which is common in old age. If they are struggling to make decisions, follow directions and need lots of prompts and reminders they may lack the capacity to live independently, then live-in care needs to be considered.

If you notice your loved one showing any of these signs, or anything that is out of character, then the next step is to talk to them about their needs. It is important for your loved one to realise and understand that they need support around the home, and that they can choose the best care option to enable them to continue to live at home safely.
