Respite care is when the usual carer takes a break from caring duties temporarily and somebody else steps in to cover this period. This may be when a family carer needs a break for their wellbeing or an employed carer is due annual leave.
Respite care could be for anything from a few hours or days to weeks, it could be a one off or a regular arrangement. The respite carer will take on the responsibilities of the usual carer to ensure the person who needs care receives the same level of care and attention during this time.
A respite carer can provide help with personal care, medication, preparing food, shopping, housekeeping, attending appointments, mobility support or even just company to ensure the cared for person is well looked after in their usual carer’s absence. Respite carers such as ours will also be trained in caring for people with a range of specific conditions such as dementia, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, post-hospital care and palliative care so will be fully prepared to provide the same high level of care as usually received.
Respite care will aim to keep to the same schedule as usual where possible to minimise disruption to usual routines which can be especially helpful when caring for patients with dementia or learning disabilities.
Whether a regular carer is paid or unpaid, it is important for them to take a break from time to time for their own mental wellbeing and physical health. Respite care allows for them to do this with full confidence that they are leaving the person they care for in the best possible hands, so they can fully relax and switch off.
